Curling has been a sport that has earned medals at the Winter Olympic Games since the 1998 Winter Olympics. It is currently comprised of men’s, mixed doubles, and women’s competitions (the mixed doubles competition was played for the first time in the year 2018).
In February 2002 In February 2002, the International Olympic Committee retroactively decided that the curling contest of the 1924 Winter Olympics (originally called Semaine des Sports d’Hiver or International Winter Sports Week) was to be officially recognized as Olympic events, and not be considered to be demonstration events. Therefore, it was the very first time Olympic medals for curling, that was at the time played outside, were awarded during the 1924 Winter Games, with the gold medal being won from Great Britain, two silver medals won by Sweden, and the bronze medal by France. A demonstration event was played during the 1932 Winter Olympic Games between four teams from Canada and four teams from the United States, with Canada winning 12 games against 4.
Since the sport’s inclusion during the 1998 Olympics, Canada has dominated the game with their male teams winning gold medals in 2006 2010 and 2014 as well as silver in 2002 and 1998. Women’s teams won gold in both 1998 and 2014 and silver in 2010 and a bronze medal in 2002 and 2006. Mixed doubles was awarded gold in the year 2018.
